Training Opportunities

CASBHC Annual Conference in Denver, September 21-22, 2006

"Motivating Youth and Parents of School-age Children to Reduce Risk Behavior" is the focus of the 4th Annual workshop and conference. September 21st will feature an afternoon workshop on the actual techniques of motivational interviewing with adolescents and parents. September 22nd will be a full-day devoted to the application of motivational strategies to specific risk behaviors such as overweight, substance abuse, motor vehicle safety.

The event will be located at the REI Flagship store at 1416 Platte Street. participants may register for either or both days. Information and registration is available on our website, www.casbhc.org.

Nurturing Parenting Conference, September 28, 2006

Hosted by the Colorado Children's Trust Fund, at the Denver Stapleton Radisson (3333 Quebec St.). Dr. Stephen Bavolek, author of the Nurturing Parenting Program, will discuss how this proven program model can strengthen and support families in your area. The Colorado Children's Trust Fund will also be scouting for agencies who would like to implement this program in their local area, with a chance of funding in the future. RM-SAM Conference, October 27, 2006

“Hot Topics in Adolescent Medicine” will be held on Friday, October 27, 2006, at the Ben Nighthorse Campbell Auditorium at the Fitzsimmons Campus in Denver. The University of Colorado School of Medicine will be offering 7 AMA PRA category 1 credits. Speakers include Dr. Susan Coupey, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, on adolescent bone health and menstrual disorders, Stephen Daniels—adolescent obesity, David W. Kaplan—the future of adolescent medicine, John Ogle—tuberculosis in adolescents, Mary Stephenson—black box warnings on ADHD and SSRIs and Barbara Ritchen—the top health risks to teens in Colorado. The registration fee $45, which includes CME and a box lunch.

Colorado SBHC Funding

In June, Colorado Governor, Bill Owens signed HB1396, sponsored by Rep. Andrew Kerr of Lakewood and Sen. Abel Tapia into law establishing the Colorado SBHC Funding Act. The Colorado Department of Health is designated in the statute to implement the law. The law provides funding for sustaining existing school-based health centers, as well as planning and funding new SBHCs. HIV & STDs

Program Aims to Reach Hispanic Youths to Prevent HIV: An HIV prevention program that emphasizes abstinence and condom use as culturally accepted and effective methods to prevent sexually transmitted diseases succeeded in reducing the incidence of risky behaviors in Hispanic adolescents in grades 8 through 11, according to report in the August issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Promising Practices Network (PPN) on Children, Families and Communities, provides quality, evidence-based information about what works. PPN, operated by RAND, provides links to short summaries of the latest findings in the scientific literature and other helpful resources. The site makes accessible findings from academic and research journals, synthesized and formatted into easy-to-read summaries. It is continuously updated.
