From the Executive Director
Over 200 professionals attended the Raising the
Bar: Frontiers in Adolescent Reproductive Health conference in mid-April.
CASBHC was fortunate to have partnered with the Colorado Organization on
Adolescent Pregnancy, Parenting and Prevention to host the 2-day
conference.
I would like to thank Lori Casillas, COAPPP Executive
Director, and Robyn Aasmundstad, COAPPP Operations and Communications
Coordinator, Ronnie Rosenbaum, COAPPP board member, and the staff of
COAPPP for their tremendous work on the conference. Thanks also to the
program planning committee, which included CASBHC members Lonna Bloom
(The Rocky Mountain Youth Clinics), Lisa Abrams (Denver Health), Susan
Rowley (Boulder Valley School District), and Lynn Bakken (Metro Community
Provider Network).
On behalf of CASBHC, I would like to extend our gratitude
to the Colorado Health Institute and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of
Colorado for their generous contributions to our Inspiration Awards
Banquet and to Jeff Bontrager, Senior Research Analyst at CHI for his
presentation "Examining
the Role of School-Based Health Care in Colorado's Safety Net: Access
Utilization and Revenue", which is now available at

CASBHC Announces 2008 Award Recipients
On April 17, 2008, eighty CASBHC members and friends
gathered for the 2008 Inspiration Awards Banquet at the Sheraton DTC
Hotel in Greenwood Village. A panel of CASBHC board
members was charged with the difficult task of selecting winners from
nominations submitted by their colleagues. All of the nominees are
outstanding in their field and are to be commended for their service.
The winners by award category are:

Alameda High School Kids and Teen Clinic Opens
A new SBHC has opened in Lakewood at Alameda High School,
1255 S. Wadsworth Boulevard. The new clinic is open four days a
week, year round, and will serve Alameda High students as well as children
and teens within the community.
The clinic is a collaborative project of Jefferson County Public Schools,
Jefferson County Public Schools Medicaid and Homeless Outreach
Program, Metro Community Provider Network and Jefferson Center for
Mental Health. For additional information, contact Metro Community

Survey Results
Earlier
this year, SBHC program sponsors were asked to participate in an
on-line survey designed by CASBHC and CHI to collect consistent
utilization and finance data for the 2006-2007 school year. Highlights
from the survey include:
- 193,153
students had access to a SBHC
- 20,964
students used SBHC services
- 66,708
visits were made to SBHCs
- 30,442
immunizations were administered
The composition of the visits were:
- 60%
Primary care
- 16%
Mental health
- 11%
Substance abuse counseling
- 4%
Immunization only
- 4%
Other
- 3%
Dental care
- 2%
Health education only

4th Annual Teen Art Exhibit and Silent Auction, June 14, 2008

Voz y Corazon Suicide Prevention Program hosts the 4th
Annual Teen Art event at the Tivoli, Turnhalle on the Auraria Campus, 900
Auraria Parkway in Denver. The event will run from 6 - 11 p.m. $10
cover fee; free admission for youth 17 and under. Organizational partners
include Mental Health Center of Denver, Denver Area Youth Services,
Denver Public Schools, Girls Incorporated of Metro Denver, Hermanas de
Color Unida para Educacion, and The Colorado Trust. For more information,

the 2008 Inspiration Award Winners
The
following highlights about our winners are excerpts from their
nominations.
Bill Singleton,
Physician Assistant for Denver Health, currently works in the Rachel Noel
Middle School SBHC. Bill has dedicated the past 14 years of his
career to providing primary health care services and mentoring
youth, particularly young men.
Sherrod Beall, Nurse Practitioner, has worked over 20
years as a champion for disadvantaged youth. She currently
works with the SBHCs at Southwest Open School in Cortez
and Durango High School. Sherrod has been instrumental in the
organization of CASBHC's Rural Health Consortium.
Joie Foster, Dental Hygienist, has worked in Greeley
and Evans schools for the past five years. In addition to providing
dental services to underserved populations, she has actively developed
a community support network for dental and health services in the
region.
Erin Bennetts is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker
for Denver Health at Kepner Middle School. Erin has worked as a
mental health therapist with Denver School-Based Health Centers since
2004. Erin is recognized as the "go-to" person for the
students under her care. Erin also serves as a mentor for the Voz y
Corazon program.
Jaynee Fontecchio-Spradling, Registered Nurse, has been a
school nurse for 30 years. She administratively moved the concept of a
school-based health center at Durango High School from idea to fruition.
Jaynee serves on the School Health Community Advisory Council and is also
active in CASBHC's Rural Health Consortium.
Dr. Larry Wolk, MD, serves as a volunteer Executive
Director of Rocky Mountain Youth Clinics. Since 1996, he has been
dedicated to improving pediatric health care in Colorado. Dr. Wolk served
on the CASBHC Board of Directors for 10 years. He has received numerous
awards from local and national organizations for his contributions to
pediatric health.
Betty Pepin, Executive Director for Community Health
Services, rose from administrative assistant to executive director
of one of Colorado's premier school health providers. Betty has dedicated
21 years to improving the health of Colorado's children. In addition to
serving on several local boards and committees, Betty has been on the
board of CASBHC since its inception in 1996 and is on the Governmental
Affairs Committee for the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care.
